Graduate Standard 7: Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community
7.1 Understand and apply the key principles described in codes of ethics and conduct for the teaching profession.
As future teachers, it is vital that we uphold the commitment of protecting students welfare as well well as demonstrating and understanding the South Australian Code of Ethics for Teachers.
As something that surrounds our everyday lives, technology and the use of online sites and social media add a new dimension to protection and wellbeing of our students. Teachers should be educating students on their use of technology and what are safe sites and what are not. Schools should also be blocking in appropriate sites and have a filter on internet usage. However, the use of internet is not limited to the classroom and school. Schools should also be educating parents and families on the use of technology and how dangerous some sites can be and what students should/should not be putting up on social media. Sites such as http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/ are great for educating students, schools and parents about IT use. There are also lesson plans available online for lessons promoting safer internet use.http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/Home/Schools/Teacher%20resources/Indigenous%20resources.aspx
(this is a good source used for Indigenous education, however, it can be used in all classroom for education on cyber safety)
Evidence:
7.2 Understand the relevant legislative, administrative and organisational policies and processes required for teachers according to school stage.
Student interpretation: teaching is not only about standing in front of a class teaching, the role of a teacher goes fare wider. Teachers role includes many organisational, administration and legative duties and requirement. As an administrative task, teachers must keep record of assessment and reporting. The must be ver orgnaised and continue to update their teacher registration by attending numerous PD and training days.
ICT integration: through the continued improving ICT training and technological documents available, teachers can easily maintain records through electronic resources and share assessment on the internet. The internet is a great tool to update policies and renew their training. Teachers can also use school web pages such as ‘daymap’ to track students records, attendance, marks and contact information.
Pedagogical reasoning: teachers can easily obtain their teacher registration and continue their training online. They can use the site such as http://www.trb.sa.edu.au/news-teachers-portal-2014to obtain registration and regularly update using the portal.
Evidence:
· Adopted the policies at Marryatville High School
7.3 Understand strategies for working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers.
The teacher/parent relationship is very important in sustaining a positive education for the students. Teacher must be professional, confidential and flexible when working with parents.
Thanks to ICT, it is a lot easier for schools and teachers to keep in contact with parents. Not only is it a useful way of contacting the parents through text or email if the student is away, it is also good for teachers as a way of emailing parents. Teachers often email parents to keep up communication with assignments, class productivity/behaviour, school events etc.
ICT portals such as Edmodo and commdata are also easy ways of connecting the classroom to the home. Through using these sites, parents are able to gain an insite in what due, whats happening in the classroom, when assignments are due etc.
As an ESL teacher it is a great way of communication as most parents are overseas or don’t speak English, so translating emails is a lot more of an effective tool of communication rather than a phone call.
Evidence:
7.4 Understand the role of external professionals and community representatives in broadening teachers’ professional knowledge and practice.
Teaching is a job that means we will never stop learning, improving and gaining skills. Learning will mean that we will keep up with the curriculum, the ICT reuirments and engagement with students. Fortunately, teachers today have a wide access to a range of great websites that they can access resources, information, lesson plans and share their information and resources with others. Webistes such as scootle, tefl, tes.com etc are great for sharing resources with other sources. There are also a number of facebook sites where teachers share resources. Not only do teachers have access to these resources, but they can share experiences and knowledge of cultures, systemes and the backgrounds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and international students. As an ESL teacher, ICT use is very beneficial for sharing resources and experiences
