Graduate Standard 6: Engage in professional learning
6.1 Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in identifying professional learning needs.
AITSL Standard: As teachers, it is very important that we continue to develop our resources, ICT knowledge, curriculum knowledge and standards. Professional development is a vital part of teaching that is used to reflect on our teaching, learn new things and keep up to date of our expectations. The Proffessional Standards for Teacheing provides a base that means teachers are kept at a high standard, is an aspiration and guideline for teachers and an accountability for their work.
ICT: ICT is incorporated in PD by ICT journals and programs such as LAMS to keep teachers up to date, reflecting and acting upon the standards
Pedagogical Justification: Teachers can use the incorporation of ICT and PD to help research, have continuous accessibility and an easy way to store their PD, sort it out and collect and collect information.
E.g. As a teacher I would like to use Edmodo and Prezo to keep my students and myself up to date with teaching, learning and the curriculum.
Rationale: PD through ICT allows teachers to be conncted, improve their teaching practice and keep up to date with the curriculum.
Evidence:
6.2 Understand the relevant and appropriate sources of professional learning for teachers.
Keeping in contact with teachers on a communal, national and international level is important for sharing ideas, keeping up to date, improving skills and improving pedagogy. It is also important to get involved to improve knowledge about your ICT and technological tools.
Teachers are able to join groups such as http://www.htasa.org.au/ (history teachers association of SA) to share resource, gain support in their teaching area, arrange meetings lectures, seminars, conferences and other activities with other subject teachers in the state. Websites like this are a great way to engage with other teachers and remove the feeling of isolation and the pressure of feeling alone in teaching.
When teaching, I will use websites like this to keep up to date and use their conferences etc as my PD days.
Evidence:
6.3 Seek and apply constructive feedback from supervisors and teachers to improve teaching practices.
Engaging with fellow collegeous is extremely important in teaching and enjoying your job. Not only is it a support network, but a great way to share resources and reflect.
The use of ICT means that teachers can easily keep connected not just in the school, but within the community, national and international. Sites such as edmodo and facebook are great ways to promote this engagement and interaction.
For eample, teachers of Adelaide https://www.facebook.com/groups/166238006739313/?fref=ts are great ways to keep informed of curriculum, jobs, advice and resources.I would like to use blogs, discussion boards along with programs such as Edmodo and Facebook to engage with fellow teachers
Evidence:
6.4 Demonstrate an understanding of the rationale for continued professional learning and the implications for improved student learning.
Teachers can always learn from each other, applying advice that other teachers give you is always beneficial, whether or not it works. Applying what you learn in professional development is also very important. In the end, teachers jobs are to improve students learning, putting feedback and knowledge is a challenging yet rewarding stimulus of teaching.
Not every teaching strategy is going to work for each students, the more you engage yourself in PD and learn about different learning styles and practices is very beneficial, along with learning about learning disorders and disabilities. The use of ICT can be very beneficial towards finding different activities for different students and learning number of different lessons and ideas.
As an ESL teacher, PD days, engagemenet with fellow teachers, mentors and students is very important to my job. I think sharing and reflecting with fellow teachers is very important and i hope to use that feedback and activily put it into practice. I can look up sites such as Scootle to learn and share new resources and ideas.
